How to sow hot chili

Hot chili also known as hot peppers can be a little tricky to germinate because they are heat-lovers. Temperatures around 75-85°F corresponding to 28-30 °C is optimal for germinating of most hot peppers. Follow these tips to get the best result:

  • Place the flower pots as warm as possible (if you place them directly on a heater, place a book or similar between the heater and the flower pot to better distribute the heat AND be very careful to keep the soil moist.
  • Make a plastic bag hoodie with wholes and cover the flowerpot. This will work as a small green house with high humidity
  • Most seeds will germinate within 10-14 days
  • Be sure always to keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet as this can result in rotting of the seeds instead of germination.

When the seeds have germinated and the first set of true leaves have appeared, carefully transplant to bigger containers.

Keep hot peppers in a warm, sunny place e.g. a greenhouse, the patio or a sunny window sill. Nourish them with plenty of water and remember to fertilize. Fruits will appear 2-3 months after germination.

You are also more than wellcome to view our little how to plant chili video here.

Hot peppers are beautiful plants, especially the Hot Purira Pepper is very decorative with its upright fruits in different colours. If you like spicy food, hot peppers are excellent to give flavour and heat – but use with care! I think one of the most famous dishes with hot peppers must be chili con carne, but the huge range of different kind of peppers makes you able to chose if your kind of pepper should just accomplish other flavours or whether you want it hot, hotter or really hot..
