What are meaningful gifts to you?
Gifts that gives back
The holiday season has started and to a lot of people that means exchanging wish lists and feeling stressed about finding the perfect gift for the right person.
To us exchanging gifts like ”I buy you a $50 purple t-shirt and you buy me a black one in return” simply hasn’t got a lot of meaning.
In the same way as ”I give you $20 so you can buy your own present” is similar to saying ”I have to give you something because it is Christmas, but I actually really don’t give a s**t”.
The thought behind the gift that counts
There is more to gift giving than the simple exchange of products. There is a saying that it is the thought behind the gift that counts, not the value of the gift itself. That’s true – to some extend.
Do you agree that the best thing about receiving a gift is knowing that a friend, child or family member has made or picked out something special for you to make you happy?
One of the best gifts can be something simple like a home made drawing from your child who has spent two entire evenings writing, drawing and coloring just for you. Find our Sprout Color Pencil here.
On the other hand, gift giving can also be quite tricky because it reveals how good you know the other person.
Can you imagine receiving a small jewelry look alike wrapped box for Christmas from a boyfriend only to discover that the box actually contains a pen drive? Would you also be slightly disappointed?
Today, there is a trend that goes against the over-the-top ”I have to buy you something no matter what”-consumerism. We have become more conscious consumers and we want to both give and receive meaningful gifts.
According to a poll taken by The American Red Cross, 79 percent of people said they would rather have a donation made in their honor than receive a useless gift. Read more here.
In other words, we want gifts with meaning. Gifts that, in one way or another, give back.
