A scenting & graceful new Sprout plant: Sweet Pea
Sweet pea is one of our new flowers in the Sprout Pencil family. We choose sweet pea because of its amazing fragrance, the wonderful colours and because it is a graceful climbing plant. And also because it fitted very well into a Valentine Limited Edition 3-pencils pack (which you can read more about here).
Tips on how to plant sweet peas
Here are some tips to help you succeed with growing your own sweet peas.
Plant outdoor
Sweet pea thrives outdoors, so plant your pencil stub outside in late spring, on a sunny spot. You can also plant in a container on the balcony.
How to grow
- Water regularly, the soil should be moist, but not soaking wet.
- The seeds will germinate after 2-3 weeks.
- When the second pair of leaves emerges, pinch them of – it is brutal, but this will make the plant bush
- Make an espalier of e.g. bamboo sticks or a dead branch from a tree. Sweet pea can be up to 2 meters high and need support for growing
- Remember to fertilize, especially if you grow in containers

Perfect to bouquets
When flowers occur, pick lots of bouquets – the more flowers you pick the more will come!
Place them at your work place or beside your bed to enjoy the fragrance.
Take care
Sweet pea is slightly toxic, so don’t eat any part of the plant. If you have children, keep out of reach and/or explain to them that some plants are for eating and some are not.
Did you know that Sweet pea was discovered by a Sicilian monk called Franciscus Cupani? He gathered seeds from wild sweet pea plants on Sicily. The seeds were then sent to England where they were grown, bred and spread to the rest of the world. It has become a key ingredient in the fragrance industry, and is one of the key note in many classic frangrances like My Burbery or L’Or J’adore by Dior.
