How to get rid of spider mites
Hot troubles
Our hot peppers have got spider mites. How do I know? Well, the most reliable symptom is the fine, tread-thin “spider web” that covers the plant. In the web, I can see small dots (mites). The leaves look dry and yellow and there are no new shoots and flowers.
This is really a pity, because spider mites are very hard to get rid off …. They are so small, that they can hide anywhere, so they are difficult to catch.
But what can you do? I hate to say it – but throw the plant away! No composting, no re-use – burn it if possible!
How to get rid of spider mites
If you want to try to save it, you can follow these steps:
- Isolate the plant from other plants
- Carefully wash the plant or spray it with a solution of insect soap – you can make your own insect soap using this recipe: 1 l water
b. 1 tablespoon soft soap
c. 0,5 dl methylated spirits - Wash off the insect soap with clean water after a couple of hours
- Keep smiling
- Repeat the treatment after a week
- Throw the plant away, if treatment didn’t help and wait for the new Sprout Hot pepper pencil to come.
You could also try
You could also try biological control of your spider mites. Biological control is the use of natural enemies to control pests, primarily on indoor plants.
Natural enemies of the spider mites are e.g. predatory mites and common green lacewing. You can buy small boxes with these insects and let them help you to fight the spider mites.
You can buy different products for biological control, try for instance one of these below:

I hope for you that you will never get spider mites in your plants, and now I will burn a few infected plants ….
