How to make flower pots
With some imagination you can make flower pots from waste and resued cans.
You can buy a lot of really nice containers and flower pots to grow your own plants, but if you like to grow many plants from seeds, it may be a good idea to look for cheaper alternatives.
At Sprout we like to reuse our things as much as possible, so we will give you some ideas to make your own flower pots out of things you would normally throw away. Buy our own Sprout Pencil with high non-gmo quality seeds here.
The solid ones
Use cans, jars, and other containers to good or too pretty to be thrown away.
When planting in solid containers, it is important to remember to make a drain. In normal flower pots there are holes in the bottom of the pot to secure a proper watering.
So if you can make holes in the containers – do it! – otherwise make a drain. A drain will catch and store surplus of water and help a better growth of your plants. You can make a drain of e.g. pebbles, leca balls, potsherds or seashells. Place a layer in the bottom of your container and fill up with a good potting soil.
Please take care and chose wisely when you select an item for reuse as a flowerpot – don’t use containers from paint, medicine, cleaning detergents and other items which may have a possible harmful effect on you and your plants.
The waste ones
You can use old newspapers, the inside from paper rolls, egg trays or empty milk cartons.
Paper rolls can be placed side by side in a tray and filled with soil before sowing the seeds. You can sow directly in the egg tray or even in the egg shell! Milk cartons can be cut in half and if you have a Pot Maker, you can easily make a lot of pots of old newspapers.

The crazy ones
What you can use for plant containers is only limited by imagination. I have seen a lot of beautiful, bizarre and crazy containers filled with wonderful flowers, herbs and vegetables. In Berlin I saw a parade of worn-out rubber boots filled with plants outside a kinder garden, on a small Danish island an old chair was given new life by plants – and why not use plants instead of candles in your chandelier?
