Soil
The importance of good soil – You will get better sprouting results if you optimize the growth conditions of your plants.
Soil is one of the three major natural resources when it comes to succesful gardening, along with air and water.
It is made up of three main components – minerals that come from rocks below or nearby, organic matter which is the remains of plants and animals that use the soil, and the living organisms that reside in it.
The importance of good soil
Many plants are really hardy and they can grow almost every where. But if you optimize their growth conditions you will get stronger and healthier plants. Plants need sunlight, water, nutrients and a growing medium to keep on growing.
A growing medium has three main functions:
- supply roots with nutrients, air, and water
- allow for maximum root growth
- physically support the plant.
These are quite essential functions for the plant, so yes, you can grow in old soil left over from last years’ containers, yes, you can use soil from the garden or backyard, but if you want better results, use fresh dirt enriched with compost or buy a good organic potting soil.
I have found this video from Soil Association, a non-profit organisation, which gives you a pretty good idea of what good growing medium is and why it is so important. Enjoy!
